Successful outdoor fern care begins with species identification. A hardy woodland fern, a tropical Boston fern, a moisture-loving native fern and a rock-growing fern may require very different light, soil, water and winter conditions.

The USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map estimates the average annual extreme minimum winter temperature for a location. It is useful for evaluating perennial cold survival, but it does not describe summer heat, humidity, rainfall, soil drainage, wind exposure or local microclimates. A USDA zone should therefore be attached to a specific species or cultivar—not to ferns as a whole.

Boston fern and related Nephrolepis plants are widely used outdoors during warm weather, but their seasonal patio care should not be applied to established hardy ferns in the ground. Understanding Full, Partial and Dappled Shade
Many garden ferns are woodland plants, but woodland does not always mean total darkness. Ferns may grow near woodland edges, beside paths, below an open deciduous canopy or where moving leaves produce alternating sun and shade.
Full Shade
Full shade receives little or no direct sun, although it still receives indirect daylight. Very dense shade beneath evergreen trees or structures may be too dark for vigorous growth, particularly when tree roots also create dry soil.
Partial Shade
Partial shade generally receives a limited period of direct sun. Gentle morning sun is usually less stressful than intense afternoon sun, but tolerance depends on species, soil moisture, latitude and summer heat.
Dappled Shade
Dappled shade is filtered through branches and leaves. It often provides enough light for good frond development while reducing midday heat and moisture loss.
Brighter Sites

Soil and Drainage
A useful starting point for many garden ferns is moisture-retentive, well-aerated soil with organic matter. This does not mean permanently saturated soil. Spring and fall are usually the least stressful planting periods because temperatures are moderate and the plant has time to establish before severe heat or cold. In cold-winter regions, spring planting gives a newly purchased fern a full growing season to develop roots. In milder climates, fall can work well when sufficient establishment time remains before unusual freezes or waterlogged winter conditions.
- Water the fern before planting. A moist root ball is easier to handle and less likely to repel water after installation.
- Prepare a broad area. Improving only a small planting hole in dense clay may create a pocket where water collects.
- Inspect the growth structure. Identify the crown, root ball and any visible creeping rhizomes before setting the depth.
- Set crown-forming ferns at their previous level. Do not bury the crown beneath several inches of soil or mulch.
- Keep surface-growing rhizomes appropriately positioned. Some rhizomes naturally grow at or near the surface and should not be deeply buried.
- Backfill gently and water thoroughly. Settle soil around the roots without compacting it into a dense mass.
- Mulch the surrounding soil. Keep mulch away from the crown and emerging fiddleheads.

Apply water to the root zone rather than routinely wetting the fronds and crown. A slow, deep application is generally more useful than frequent surface sprinkling. Mulching and Feeding
A layer of shredded leaves, leaf mold, composted bark or other suitable organic mulch can moderate soil temperature, reduce evaporation and gradually add organic matter. Apply it over the root zone, but leave the crown, exposed rhizomes and emerging fronds uncovered.
Established garden ferns in reasonably fertile soil often need little or no supplemental fertilizer. Annual organic mulch may be sufficient. Containers are more vulnerable because roots are surrounded by less insulating soil. Depending on local climate and species, options include moving the container to a sheltered unheated area, grouping pots, insulating the container or planting the fern in the ground before winter. Slugs and snails may feed on tender emerging fronds, especially in damp sheltered sites. Remove hiding places where practical and use locally recommended management methods. A native fern is native to a defined geographic area, not automatically to the entire United States. A plant native to Oregon may be outside its natural range in Florida, while an eastern woodland fern may be poorly adapted to a summer-dry western garden.
